Tri-State in bullseye for nocturnal tornadoes

Tri-State in bullseye for nocturnal tornadoes

The National Weather Service in Paducah has confirmed what many in the Tri-State already suspected:  We have a lot of tornadoes that occur in the overnight hours.

Using Data from 1950-2005, the NWS has identified a "Nocturnal Tornado Alley".  As the chart shows, more than 40% of our tornadoes have occured at night.

Between 1996 and 2012, 46 people have died in tornadoes in the Paducah warning area (most of the Tri-State).

Record string of record highs

Record string of record highs

Tuesday marked the 4th consecutive day of record high temperatures. We will likely break another record on Wednesday to extend the streak to 5 days in a row of hottest-ever temperatures. This will tie the 5-day streak from August 15-19 set in 1936, the hottest year on record. If we set another record on Thursday, we will have the longest string of records since 1898. By the way, the hottest temperature ever recorded in March was 87 degrees on March 24, 1929.

Hard freeze likely overnight

Hard freeze likely overnight

Keep an eye on your outdoor plants tonight.  Spring isn’t here yet.  A hard freeze with several hours of sub-freezing temperatures in the mid  20s will be possible overnight.  The entire Tri-State could be affected.  Almost all areas are expected to see at least a light freeze.

Fruit trees, such as apricot or pear trees, are especially vulnerable.

Thunderstorm formation is possible Sunday and Sunday night as a low pressure area passes by to the northwest.

Chance for severe weather, isolated tornadoes

Chance for severe weather, isolated tornadoes

FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE...

A COLD FRONT IS EXPECTED TO BE ACCOMPANIED BY SCATTERED SEVERE STORMS ACROSS THE TRI-STATE TODAY.  SEVERE WEATHER WILL LIKELY BEGIN AROUND 3 PM CST IN ILLINOIS AND END BY BY 9 PM IN THE EASTERN PART OF THE VIEWING AREA. ISOLATED TORNADOES WILL BE POSSIBLE IN ADDITION TO GUSTY WINDS AND HAIL.  SEE THE CHART ABOVE FOR THE CHANCES OF A TORNADO HITTING WITHIN 25 MILES OF YOUR AREA.

Friday temps challenge record

Friday temps challenge record

Check out these spring-like mid-afternoon temperatures from Friday.  Our weather spotters were nearly all reporting temperatures of 60 or higher.  The record high in Evansville was 65 set just four years ago (the same year we had the ice storm).

Meteorologist Jeff Lyons is tracking the temperatures and he'll let us know if there were any records set on 14 News.

We're looking at the low 50s for high temps over the next couple of days before things cool off for a little while.  We'll have better than average weather again by late next week.

St Phillip snow

St Phillip snow

Looks like about an inch of snow at the Fraser residence in St Phillip.  This photo was taken late Tuesday morning.

Some less-travelled roads do have slick spots, so be careful.

Snow should taper off eventually and we can look for sunshine and temperatures in the mid to upper 40s for the rest of the week.
