IHSAA: Reitz enrollment up; Mater Dei down for football

The Indiana High School Athletic Association has announced enrollment totals that will eventually determine the class in which each member school participates in various sports.

Reitz now has the 70th largest enrollment in the state at 1,373.  That's up a bit from this year when the school ranked 75th.  It's not likely the increase will push the Panthers' Class 4A football program into 5A.  Classifications will be set and published within the next two weeks.

Mater Dei's enrollment dropped slightly--and now stands at 493.  The school is the 218th largest among IHSAA schools.

The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation’s Coordinated School Health Team  would like to create a resource guide of healthy alternatives for fundraisers made up of area organizations and businesses with items that could be used to raise money for schools.

The team is looking to gather a list of fundraising ideas that are easy to manage, yet have a reasonable profit capability. Ideal fundraisers will include non-food items such as flowers, plants, mulch, jewelry, etc. and those that include healthy food choices.

Reitz, Cynthia Heights qualify for State SeaPerch competition

Reitz High School and Cynthia Heights Elementary School both qualified to compete at the State SeaPerch Competition scheduled for Saturday, April 6, in Dubois County.  (An exact location is yet to be announced.) The two schools are among 64 teams that competed at the regional event earlier this month, and two of only 16 teams from both divisions from Southern Indiana to advance to the state level.

SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that trains teachers to teach their students how to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in an in-school or out-of-school setting. Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme.

Resurrection first graders already 'making a difference'

Resurrection School first graders were recently challenged by their teacher, Ms. Vangampler, to make a difference in their world.  She states, “There are many worthy causes in our local community and the world at large, and it’s impossible to support them all.  However, I am challenging the first grade class to help as many people as they can.  I will give each child $5 to use to 'go make a difference'.

Today, the first graders presented their projects to a small audience of parents and grandparents and shared how the experience made them feel.

“You will be amazed at their ideas to make a difference in their community and their world,” promised Resurrection Principal Theresa Berendes.

They are pretty remarkable.

Here are a few ideas those six-year-old students executed:

EVSC Foundation presented ten checks totaling $116,282 to each of the EVSC’s five high school principals and athletic directors in the corporation during tonight’s School Board meeting, from sponsorship proceeds of the L.E.D. scoreboards at each of the five multipurpose complexes.

The funding is used as building leaders deem appropriate, for a variety of projects and needs at each school.  Some of the things that have been funded through these monies include: classroom strategies for interactive learning, response to intervention services, student memberships in a variety of organizations, senior honor roll luncheon, student travel to academic competitions, and a class set of Advanced Placement textbooks.
