Mater Dei students' high mileage car featured on Wired.com

Mater Dei students and their futuristic vehicle are featured on a national website.

A team of student engineers recently built a car that can get over 849 miles on a tank of gas, setting a new Americn record in the Urban class. 

The team and their four cars were competing in Shell’s Eco-marathon Americas, a competition for high school and college students.

The Mater Dei Supermileage Team competed again this year against 38 high schools and 48 universities from across the United States, Canada, Mexico and South America.

On Saturday, April 13, more than 150 Indiana college students who are members of the Indiana Student Education Association are expected to join local and educator volunteers to remodel Tekoppel Elementary in Evansville.  

“Tekoppel Elementary is a kindergarten through fifth grade school in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation located in the heart of Evansville’s west side and it holds quite a history,” says project coordinator and ISTA Vice President Teresa Meredith. “Tekoppel started in 1909 as a four-room brick building. Each room had its own heating stove. Indoor plumbing wasn’t installed until 1934. It was the first county school in the state of Indiana to have a public kindergarten. In 1940, Tekoppel students could enjoy a hot lunch for 15 cents.

The 3rd annual Mater Dei Dance Marathon will take place this Friday April 5, 2013 at Mater Dei High School! Anyone and everyone are welcome to come help raise money for Riley Children's Hospital. 

Mater Dei has raised over $50,000 the past two years and are trying to reach a goal of $15,000 this Friday.

Ivy Tech Community College - Southwest hosted the second Alcoa VEX Novice-level Robotics Competition on Saturday, March 16.  Twenty-four teams ranging from grades 4 through 12 competed in “TILT!” a combination presentation and robot task competition.

In first place was the Mater Dei High School "Twirly Nuts" team with advisor Donna Richardson.

EVSC hosting kindergarten orientation

Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation elementary and K-8 schools will host kindergarten orientation meetings on Tuesday, April 2, with the exception of Lincoln School, whose session will be April 9, from 11 a.m. to noon 

Parents/guardians will have the opportunity to enroll students in kindergarten if they haven’t already done so, and receive additional information regarding kindergarten, meet school staff, ask questions and share information about their children.

EVSC students advance to national business competition

Sixteen students from the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation will be among approximately 5,000 high school students converging on Orlando, Fl., for the Business Professionals of America (BPA) national conference, May 8-12.

The following students have qualified to compete at the conference. The award they won at the state level and school is noted below.

Alcoa program aimed at teaching kids value of conservation

Students from Dexter Elementary School will be the first class to take part in Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden’s AISLE Programing (Alcoa Institute for Sustainable Living Education).  The program will begin at 9:00 AM Tuesday, March 19 on zoo grounds.

The programming offered to over 600 students from EVSC Title 1 schools now through May is funded by Alcoa and designed to teach students sustainable living by taking every action possible to conserve the planet’s resources. This program blend’s the zoo’s commitment to sustainability and its expertise in delivering experiential education. Sustainable living via experiential learning is to teach every child the value in preserving the Earth’s diverse living systems through our own conservation activities.
