Plant Conservation Day at Mesker

Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden has teamed up with local conservation partners to present Plant Conservation Day on Saturday, May 19.  This event is being held in recognition of National Plant Conservation Day and will showcase many positive and crucial roles plants play in the environment. 

A kudzu pull by several volunteer groups at 8:30 a.m. in the Mesker Mall will kick off the event. 

One of the day’s highlights is a “Sky Art” photo opportunity in the kudzu patch in the Mesker Mall.  The public is welcome to take part in this unique photo opportunity.

Master Gardener Plant Sale set for this weekend

The annual Southwestern Indiana Master Gardener Association Plant Sale takes place this Saturday and Sunday at the Vanderburgh Co. 4-H Center Show Barn.

For 2012 they will be offering plants that are deer and rabbit resistant, new perennial plant introductions, expanded selection of herbs and veggies, and perennials and annuals for both sun and shade. Over 10,000 plants will be available.

Need plants?  Bloomin' Zoo set for this weekend

Tropical bedding plants, unusual perennials, trees, shrubs, and ornamental grasses are among the offerings that will be available for purchase during the 11th annual Bloomin’ Zoo Garden Festival.  The Zoo’s Botanical Department has been busy growing and preparing these unique items for the festival that is taking place from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on May 5 and 6.  Folk music will add ambiance to the event as visitors make their selections from among the largest available collection in the history of the Bloomin’ Zoo Garden Festival.

Graduation dates for the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation have been announced.   Reitz seniors will walk down the aisle on Friday, May 25 at 5:30 p.m. in the Reitz Bowl.

As in years past, EVSC graduations will occur on Memorial Day weekend to allow families the opportunity to attend multiple graduations and to allow more travel time for those individuals coming to Evansville from out of town.

St. Paul's United Church of Christ will hold a special Plants Galore, Rummage and More sale on Saturday, April 28 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Kuchens and barbecue will be available for dining in or carrying out.

Give Hope Run set for Saturday; benefits St. Jude Children's Hospital

The second annual Give Hope Run in Evansville, IN will take place on Saturday, April 28 at Burdette Park beginning at 7:30am.  The family-friendly 5K run, walk, and Kids Dash benefits the lifesaving mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other deadly childhood diseases.  The 2011 event raised over $65,000 and had nearly 1,200 participants. Evansville was the number one participation city in America among 80 other cities with similar St. Jude 5K events.  This year’s event has already raised over $85,000 and promises to achieve an even larger participation than last year.

One-day training aimed at helping women get involved with Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity of Evansville Women Build, in partnership with Lowe’s, is offering  free  construction training clinics for area women. No registration is required and all experience levels are welcome to attend. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about Habitat’s local Women Build project which will begin in the Glenwood Neighborhood on July 7.  Lunch will be available in the parking lot after each clinic at a cost of $5.00 to support Habitat’s Women Build program.
