Ronald McDonald House gives scholarships to Reitz, Forest Park students

 

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ohio Valley is presenting two scholarships to area high school students.    

The charity will present a scholarship to Kayla Brahm and Katelyn Lutz for $5,000 each.  Brahm is a senior at Forrest Park Junior/Senior High School.  Lutz is a senior at FJ Reitz High School. 

Brahm excels academically with a 3.9 GPA and has been highly involved in the community.   Lutz volunteers her time at Ronald McDonald House and excels academically with a 4.0 GPA.  Public recognition of these scholars will take place May 28, 11:00 AM at Ronald McDonald House located at 3540 Washington Ave. Evansville,

Local group trying to help women quit smoking while pregnant

Evansville- You've probably heard that Indiana is among the states with highest smoking rates, but did you know that rates of women smoking while pregnant are also high? 

Smokefree Communities is hosting a workshop this morning they're hoping will help bring that number down.

In Indiana 17 percent of pregnant women smoke-- that's nearly twice the national average.

In Vanderburgh County that number is even higher with 22 percent of expectant mothers smoking.

Sally Bagby, formerly principal at Tekoppel Elementary, is the new principal at Cynthia Heights.  She's been with the EVSC for 32 years and will fill the position vacated by Lee Ann Shields, who is retiring.

Taking over as principal at Tekoppel Elementary is Michael Taylor, formerly principal of Daniel Wertz Elementary.

Taylor has been with the EVSC for 25 years.

James Nathan Steele, formerly Title 1, Grade 5 and 6 teacher at Delaware School, is the school's new principal as part of restructuring within the EVSC.

Steele has a B.S. degree from the University of Evansville and a Master of Education degree from Indiana Wesleyan University. 

He is certified as a building level administrator for all schools and in general education and social studies.

There’s a new principal coming to Daniel Wertz Elementary School.  Doug Mills, formerly assistant principal at Lodge Community School, will take on the position for the 2013-14 school year.

Mills holds a B.S. degree from Indiana State University and a Master of Education from Indiana Wesleyan University.  He is certified as a building level administrator for all schools and as a teacher of choral music, grades K-12. 

Prior to serving at Lodge he was principal at New Harmony School. 

Reitz grad named new Central girls basketball coach

Reitz grad named new Central girls basketball coach

 

The EVSC Board of School Trustees has approved the hiring of Brittany Maners as the varsity coach for girls basketball at Central High School.

Most recently, Maners was the freshman girls’ basketball coach at Bedford North Lawrence High School where she also taught physical education and health classes. In addition, Maners also was the assistant girls’ tennis coach and served as counselor for Oakland City University and University of Southern Indiana basketball camps.

Maners was a high school valedictorian at Reitz and later went on to become a three-time Academic All American at Oakland City University.
